What compressing CR2 actually does
CR2 is Canon's DSLR RAW format, used from 2004 until the switch to CR3. Archives from every Canon EOS body up to 2018 are full of them. Developing to JPEG shrinks the frame 20–40× but the 14-bit depth and exposure headroom are gone for good.
