What compressing EXR actually does

EXR (OpenEXR) is a high-dynamic-range frame: 16 or 32 bits per channel instead of eight. Files come out of 3D renders, compositing and VFX pipelines. It usually carries extra passes — depth, normals, mattes — and those are what weigh the most.
