Short reference

JPG2 won't open? Most likely, everything is fine with the file

This is a rare name for the JPEG 2000 format, an image that was once intended as a more modern replacement for the regular JPG. It is created by scanners and archiving systems, and ordinary programs often simply do not know the .jpg2 extension.

Brief information

JPG2 is a JPEG 2000 image

When Windows asks you to select a program, this does not mean that the image is damaged: most often it simply does not recognize the extension.

JPEG 2000 was invented as a more technologically advanced replacement for regular JPEG: it can compress without loss and is better able to withstand severe reductions in quality. But browsers and operating systems never made it an everyday format. Therefore, JPG2 is more often found in scans, document archives and specialized systems than in ordinary photographs.

Four names, one technology

JPG2, JP2, JPF and JPX look like different formats, but for the average user the difference is almost always insignificant.
