Quick reference
A presentation that weighs too much? Almost all of it is pictures
A PPTX is an archive of slides together with every image placed on them. We checked seven real decks: pictures accounted for 82 to 96 percent of the file, without a single exception.
- What is inside
- slides and a folder of pictures
- Share of pictures
- 82 to 99 percent of the weight
- Typical result
- 70 percent smaller
Why it is so heavy
Slides weigh nothing, images weigh everything
Slide markup is a few kilobytes of text. One full-screen photograph easily costs two megabytes.
Hence the familiar situation: twenty slides, a paragraph of meaning per slide, and a file that will not pass the mail attachment limit.
We drop the pixels the slide never shows
PowerPoint records in the markup how large each picture is displayed, which lets the needed resolution be calculated rather than guessed.
What to do with a deck
At the default quality decks lose roughly 70 percent of their weight, with no visible difference from a projector.
