Why a scan shrinks so much

A scanned page is a vast white field with occasional black strokes. Group 4 encoding, invented for fax machines, stores runs rather than pixels: "two hundred white, three black, a hundred and eighty white." On text that wins 10–50×, and the compression is fully reversible — the image comes back pixel for pixel.

Black-and-white pages are detected and given Group 4 automatically. Colour scans and photographs stored in TIFF compress differently, and the gain there is more modest, because they contain almost no runs of identical pixels.

Multi-page files

TIFF can hold dozens of pages in one file, and such files are processed whole: pages do not scatter, order is preserved, metadata carries over into the result. That matters for accounting and banking documents, where a whole bundle of scans travels as a single file.

If the TIFF is not for storage but for sending or showing a document, consider converting it to PDF: the weight is comparable, but it opens on any phone and in any browser.

Common questions

Does compressing a TIFF degrade the scan?

For black-and-white documents, no: Group 4 is lossless and the compressed file reproduces the original image exactly. Loss appears only if you deliberately lower quality on a colour scan or a photograph.

How do I compress a multi-page TIFF?

Exactly like a single-page one — upload the whole file. Every page is re-compressed and comes back as one TIFF in the original order.

Does compression change the resolution?

No. DPI stays as it was, which matters when a scan has to meet a filing requirement such as 300 dpi — only the file size goes down.

What is the difference between TIFF and TIF?

Nothing but the number of letters. It is the same format; TIF dates from when Windows allowed only three characters in an extension.
