Three different ways to shrink a picture
Images are not compressed one way but three, and which one applies decides what happens to your file.
Lossy re-encoding (JPEG, WebP, JPEG 2000) coarsens detail the eye barely registers. It wins the most — 2–5× — and it belongs on photographs. On text, screenshots and thin lines it produces mush and colour fringing.
Palette reduction (PNG, BMP, GIF) replaces millions of colours with 256 or two. Perfect for diagrams, logos and interface screenshots; on a photograph it turns smooth gradients into visible banding.
Lossless compression (TIFF, PNG) keeps every pixel exactly as it was and saves on repetition. A black-and-white scan under Group 4 encoding shrinks 10–50× without losing a single dot — which is why document scans should never be pushed through JPEG.

Decide what kind of image you have first, and only then how hard to squeeze it.
What you give up
Lossy compression cannot be undone: there is no way to recover the original detail, and no way to "decompress" a JPEG. Re-saving an already compressed JPEG damages it again even at a high quality setting — so keep originals separately and compress a copy for the task.

Common questions
How do I compress a photo without losing quality?
Only formats that store pixels as they are — PNG and TIFF — shrink losslessly, and the gain is modest on photographs. If you need a real reduction on a photo, some loss is unavoidable, but at 80% quality it is usually invisible without zooming in.
How much smaller can a photo get?
A 4–6 MB phone shot at 70–80% quality typically lands between 700 KB and 1.5 MB. Past that the gain grows slowly and the artefacts grow quickly.
Which format should I use on a website?
WebP: at the same quality it is 25–35% lighter than JPEG and every current browser supports it. JPEG stays where compatibility with older software matters.
