What makes a video smaller
Video has two dials: bitrate and resolution. Bitrate is how much data each second of picture gets; lowering it wins the most and shows up first on fast motion, where blockiness appears. Resolution is how many pixels are in a frame; going from 1080p to 720p halves them and lets a lower bitrate hold up without turning to mush.
The audio track is re-encoded separately and barely matters to the total: on an hour-long video sound is tens of megabytes against gigabytes of picture.
What to expect time-wise
Video is re-encoded frame by frame, so a one-minute clip takes seconds and a half-hour one takes minutes. If all you need is the sound — from a recorded lecture, say — extracting the track to MP3 is both faster and smarter than compressing the video.

How do I compress video for email?
Mail services accept attachments up to 20–25 MB — roughly one minute at 720p or three minutes at 480p. Anything longer does not go by email: put it in cloud storage and send a link.
Does compression hurt the picture?
Yes, and it shows first on motion, small text and sky gradients. On a static shot — an interview, a screencast, a slide deck — halving the bitrate usually goes unnoticed.
Can I extract just the audio?
Yes, that is a conversion: MP4 to MP3 gives you the track without the picture and cuts the size dozens of times. For lectures and interviews that beats compressing the video.
