From sensor data to a viewable photo

A CR2 is not really a picture yet: it is the raw data off the camera's sensor, waiting to be developed. The converter reads it, applies the camera's own white balance and colour, and renders a finished sRGB image saved as JPEG.

That is why a CR2 will not open in a browser or most phones while the JPG opens everywhere. The conversion does the develop step that Canon's software would otherwise do, and hands you the result.

What you give up

RAW's value is editing latitude — recovering blown highlights, pushing shadows, changing white balance after the fact, all from 12–14 bits per channel. JPEG is 8-bit and baked: the develop decisions are final and the extra headroom is gone.

So convert to JPG when the photo is ready to share or view, and keep the CR2 if you still plan to edit. For a format that stays RAW but opens in more software, converting CR2 to DNG is the alternative.

Common questions

Why can't I just open my CR2 directly?

Because it is raw sensor data, not a finished image. It has to be developed first — which is exactly what converting to JPG does, applying the camera's white balance and colour.

Will the JPG look like the preview on my camera?

Very close. The conversion uses the camera's own white balance, so colours match the in-camera JPEG; fine tone choices a manual edit would make are not applied.

Can I keep editing latitude?

Not in a JPG — it is 8-bit and the develop is baked in. Keep the CR2 for editing, or convert to DNG to stay in a RAW container.
