What to know before converting
Changing format never improves a picture. If a photo was already compressed as JPEG, saving it as PNG locks in every artefact and simply makes the file bigger — the lost detail does not come back.
The other direction makes sense: PNG or BMP to JPEG cuts the size several times over, as long as the picture is a photograph rather than text. Transparency is lost on the way — JPEG has none, and transparent areas turn white.
The exotic extensions — JPF, JPX, J2K — are JPEG 2000: a good format that opens almost nowhere. If someone sent you one and you need to look at it on a phone, converting to JPG is the answer.
