Developing the Nikon RAW
A NEF holds the unprocessed sensor readout, not a finished picture. The converter decodes it, applies Nikon's white balance and colour, and renders a standard sRGB image as JPEG — the same develop step Nikon's own software performs.
This is why a NEF refuses to open in browsers and most phones while the resulting JPG opens everywhere and drops to a fraction of the size.
RAW latitude versus a finished JPEG
NEF carries 12–14 bits per channel and full editing headroom: recover highlights, lift shadows, reset white balance long after the shot. JPEG is 8-bit and final — those decisions are baked in once it is written.
Convert to JPG when the photo is ready to send or post, and keep the NEF for editing. To stay in a RAW container that more programs read, convert the NEF to DNG instead.
Common questions
Why won't my NEF open normally?
It is raw sensor data rather than a developed image. Converting to JPG performs the develop — applying Nikon's white balance and colour — so the result opens everywhere.
Do the colours match the camera?
Yes, closely — the conversion uses the camera's recorded white balance, so the JPG matches the look the camera itself would produce.
Is any editing headroom lost?
Yes. A JPG is 8-bit with the develop baked in. Keep the NEF for serious editing, or convert to DNG to keep RAW data in a portable container.
